Adjectives

The use of adjectives in English is something that can be both, simple and very complex at the same time. But let's talk about the simple aspects for starters.

There are basically three places in a sentence where an adjective can appear:

  • After the verb TO BE:
This jacket is OLD. / My cousins are THIN. / I am HAPPY.
  • After certain verbs such as: feel, look, seem...:
Jack seems DEPRESSED. / Pamela and Mark look EXITED. / I feel FINE.
  • Before nouns and pronouns:
He is a SAD person. / Annie's NEW hat is beautiful. / I have got a HUGE dog.

That was easy, wasn't it?

Now, there is something that we should bear in mind when using more than one adjective describing just one thing. That is the order in which we should place the different adjectives. We normally follow this order: opinion - dimension - age - texture - shape - colour - material / nationality / place of origin - purpose. However, when using more than two adjectives, we will try to use some of them after the noun:

He has long straight fair hair. => His fair hair is long and straight.

Well, I think that was enough for today.
